VGCSA to Host Inaugural Virlina Cup Matches

Richmond, VA - A new event is coming to the VGCSA golf schedule, and it holds great promise to be an enduring one. On September 26-28, 2010, the same week as the Ryder Cup, the Virginia Golf Course Superintendents Association (VGCSA) and its counterparts in the Carolinas (CGCSA) will face off in the inaugural Virlina Cup. Eight-man squads will play Four-Ball, Foursomes and Singles Matches to determine bragging rights in the mid-Atlantic. An all-star lineup of courses in the Richmond area will host the event – Salisbury Country Club, The Foundry Golf Club and Kinloch Golf Club (ranked #1 in VA by Golf Digest). The event is presented by Syngenta.

VGCSA Past President Eric Spurlock of Hermitage CC will captain the Virginia Team, while CGCSA Executive Director Tim Kreger will captain the Carolinas Team. “We are looking forward to hosting this event at some of the finest courses in Virginia,” said Spurlock. “While we intend to be perfect hosts to our Carolinas colleagues, make no mistake, we want to win this inaugural event at home!”

Heading the Virginia Team is current VGCSA Champion Jeff Whitmire, CGCS of The Williamsburg Club, a perennial contender at the GCSAA national championship. Whitmire is joined by former national champion Bobby Friend, CGCS of Stonehenge CC, as well as six other top players: Matt Boyce (Princess Anne CC), Scott Kinnan, CGCS (Farmington CC), Andrew McCormick (Hanover CC), Jeff Snyder, CGCS (The Water’s Edge CC), Brian Vincel, CGCS (Spring Creek GC) and Josh Saunders (Kinloch GC).

The Carolinas squad is headed by current CGCSA Secretary Doug Lowe, CGCS of Greensboro Country Club (SC). The CGCSA team also includes O’Neill Crouch (Old Town Club), Chuck Connolly, (Greenville CC), Troy Thrall (Hidden Valley CC), Kyle Traynham (Willow Creek G&CC), Brooks Turner (Greensboro CC), Matthew Wharton (Carolina CC) and Anthony Dunham (Old Town Club).
