Parrish Cup had great weather for the Saturday singles matches, although we came up a little short everyone enjoyed the competition. The greens were rolling 12' on the stimpmeter, which is a good speed for tournaments, especially for Old Town which has highly undulated greens. Anything in the 11.5-12' stimpmeter reading is what our goal is for club tournaments. We have noticed that anything above these speeds will negate some pin locations on our greens, and cause the player to become a little defensive in putting. Keeping speeds in our optimum range (11.5-12) still places a premium on putting without going over the top. There are several things which affect the speed of our greens: height of cut, double cutting, triple cutting, rolling, moisture, and temperature. In addtioin we have several products which we can spray which limit the growth of the bentgrass plant. when you can slow the growth of the bentgrass plant you achieve a better cut with the mowers--resulting in a smoother green.
